This area is truly a special and sacred part of the Himalayas, where the ascetics (sadhus) have been roaming and meditating for thousands of years. One really needs to be out there to experience the special energy which exists in this region. India's longest and most sacred river Ganga originates here. There is no other river in the world that has so much religious, spiritual, cultural, and economic significance.  The trek takes us right up to Gaumukh, the snout of the Gangotri Glacier and the true source of the river Ganga & beyond. On this trek, you will always come across pilgrims doing the arduous trek to Gaumukh & back with barely anything.

Beyond Gaumukh, the established trail gives way to a poorly defined route across scree, glacial moraine, and boulder fields to Tapovan. The legendary peaks - Bhagirathi, Meru, Kedarnath, Shivling all lie in this region and contribute to the most magnificent mountain scenery in the Himalayas. Tapovan translates to a forest of austerities or spiritual practice. Lying at the foot of Shivling peak, Tapovan is a huge meadow (with no forest) and is certainly a spot for the spiritual practice of the highest order. The beautiful meadow is a delight to visit and the sheer prominence of the majestic peak Shivling is a sight to behold as the mountain rises up two kilometers vertical right in front of our eyes. The mountain is often referred as the 'Matterhorn of the Himalayas' and is flanked by the iconic peaks of Meru and Kedardome on one side and the Bhagirathi massif on the other side.

All in all - you cannot get any closer to big mountains in such a short duration than on this trek.

Show Detailed Itinerary
Arrive Dehradun early in the morning and drive to Uttarkashi. Lunch enroute!
Another long day on the road today, as we drive to the roadhead to Gangotri. Gangotri is a sacred place for the Hindus, as it is the source of the River Ganga, and consequently visited by hordes of pilgrims. Not surprisingly, and like any pilgrimage town in India, Gangotri is now a very busy place and we spend most of the time in our guest house resting and acclimatizing. The walk begins with a gradual ascent through pine forests alongside the roaring Bhagirathi River with towering cliffs on the left. We pass a check post for the Gangotri Conservation Project. Chirbasa means home of pine trees! From here you get superb views of Manda peak (6511 m), Bhrigu Parbat (6000 m), Bhagirathi I, II and III ( 6856 m, 6512 m, & 6454 m respectively). Overnight in tents
It is a two hour trek to Bhojbasa (3784 m) which has an ashram, a tourist guest house and a police outpost. Bhojbasa is named after birch (Bhojpatra) forests in the area. It is presently totally denuded of the Bhojpatra trees. Today, the dead woods of Birch remind us of the past glory of the Birch forest. Since the area has been declared as a National Park & the no of people entering the park has been restricted one can notice early signs of re-forestation. After lunch we walk up to Gaumukh, the snout of the river. Overnight in tents
The trail from Bhojbasa to Gaumukh is a fairly gradual ascent. Today's walk will feel strenuous with the combined effects of the altitude, the glacier crossing and the steep and rocky terrain on the final climb to Tapovan. Here the soaring peak of Shivling (6543 metres) comes into view. The trek begins over rocky boulders and becomes noticeably steep gradually over the rocky terrain. The glacier is covered by moraine so you do not need any technical equipment, although a steadying trekking pole is definitely handy. Take the last step up the steep rocky path to enter the Tapovan meadow and view the spectacular sight all around you. You are surrounded by the giants - Shivling, Meru, Manda, the Bhagirathi group, Kedardome, Kharchakund and many more. Overnight in tents
A day to rest & acclimatise to high altitude and soak in the majesty of the place.
Day hikes to either Meru Glacier or Kirti Bamak glacier. Return to Tapovan Overnight in tents
Rise early to see the spectacular sight of the sunrise on the surrounding 6000 metre peaks. Shivling is undoubtedly the star of the show, commanding instant attention as it soars dramatically into the sky, dwarfing its neighbours. Today we will retrace our steps to Chirbasa. A steep descent down to the glacier is followed by a rocky traverse of the glacier and a gradual descent to Chirbasa. Overnight in tents
It is a 3 hour trek from Chirbasa to Gangotri from where we have a 4 hour drive to Uttarkashi. Overnight Hotel.
After breakfast we set off for a 6hrs drive to Dehradun airport. Trip ends!

What to expect

A trip graded as a Moderate Trek takes you to high altitude regions - above 3000m / 10,0000ft and will involve considerable altitude gain over the course of the trek. Altitude will have an effect, hence one would need to be careful about acclimatization. Moderate treks will have multiple days which involve considerable amount of ascents and descents  and would require walking for more than 6 hours. There might be a day or two of camping in relatively high altitudes above 4000m / 13,000ft. A typical trek will last around a week to ten days depending on the region and is a good step-up for people who have completed a beginner trek.

Good fitness levels are needed to enjoy these trips. Some training up before the trip would help. Prior trekking experience is desirable.
