Kuari Pass is probably the best window to view high Himalayan Peaks all lined one after the other in one magnificent arc. This trek follows a trail blazed by Lord Curzon, the Viceroy of India, in 1905 and by Shipton and Tilman 30 years later. The Kuari Pass (3,650m) lies in the heart of Chamoli district of the Garhwal Himalayas. The 9-day trek passes through dense oak, pine, rhododendron, deodar and fir forests, and traverses several high alpine meadows. The area has numerous streams and waterfalls and rare flora and fauna. The trek is also dotted with quaint villages giving us a great insight into the everyday lives of the hardened hill folk. The 270 degrees Himalayan arc includes peaks of Chaukhamba, Kamet, Nilgiri, Neelkanth, Hathi Parbat, Ghodi Parbat, Barmal, Nanda Devi, Changabang, Dunagiri and Bithartoli all high 6000 & 7000ers.

Itinerary

Show Detailed Itinerary
We board the overnight train from New Delhi to arrive in Haridwar early the next morning.
Arrive early morning and board the vehicles at the station setting off on a long drive to Chefna beyond Ghat. We drive along the Ganga till Devprayag and then on along the Alaknanda (its tributary) and pass the holy confluences of Devprayag, Rudraprayag, Karnaprayag and Nandprayag. At Nandprayag, we leave the Alaknanda and follow the Nandakini River to our first campsite at Chefna on the banks of the River. Overnight at Camp.
We start by crossing the bridge on the Nandakini River immediately after leaving our campsite. It is a long but gently undulating climb up to the large village of Ghunni. Our camp is just next to the village school right at the top. Overnight at Camp.
As we leave Ghunni the climb is steep, but soon it levels out and we wend our way through grassy meadows and later through dense oak and pine forests till we reach Ramni pass. From the pass we get our first view of Kuari Pass. It’s a long but gradual descent to Sem Kherak, our next campsite. Overnight at Camp.
It’s a long day today as we begin our walk with a long descent through dense forests to the village of Jhenjipani. From here we continue descending for another hour till we reach the suspension bridge on the Birahiganga River. After two hours of climbing, the trail levels out. Another hour or so, we reach Pana and take the trail that leads us to our campsite above the village. Overnight at Camp.
We first climb the ridge immediately above our campsite through dense forests. Thereafter the trail levels out for about an hour before it descends steeply to a big waterfall. The trail then goes steep uphill again for an hour and half before leveling out as we reach another gushing stream. We go on to make the final hour and half’s ascent of the day to reach Upper Dhakwani. Overnight at Camp.
We make a very early start today to take advantage of good weather conditions so that we have clear skies when we reach the Kuari Pass. This is the highlight of the trip with breathtaking views of the Greater Himalaya in a 270 degress arc. It is only a 2-3 hours pleasant walk through alpine meadows as we descend to our campsite in the forest at Tali (3310m). Overnight at Camp.
We start the day climbing up for a while with views of the majestic Nanda Devi and surrounding peaks on our right. Once we have passed upper Tali and we take the small trail just along the Cliffside and later turn left to enter the Gorson meadows. We descend gradually through the meadows and then through forests to reach the roadhead at the GMVN cottages. Our vehicles will be waiting for us at Auli to drive us to our hotel at Pipalkoti. Overnight at hotel in Pipalkoti.
We start early to be able to complete the long drive to Haridwar in time to catch the evening Shatabdi to Delhi arriving Delhi at 10.45 pm.

What to expect

A trip graded as a Moderate Trek takes you to high altitude regions - above 3000m / 10,0000ft and will involve considerable altitude gain over the course of the trek. Altitude will have an effect, hence one would need to be careful about acclimatization. Moderate treks will have multiple days which involve considerable amount of ascents and descents  and would require walking for more than 6 hours. There might be a day or two of camping in relatively high altitudes above 4000m / 13,000ft. A typical trek will last around a week to ten days depending on the region and is a good step-up for people who have completed a beginner trek.

Bethartoli group from Khulara campsite. Meadow of Auli with Mt.Nanda Devi in the background. Artificial lake at Auli with Bharmal peak dominating the skyline. View of Pangarchula peak from Tali top. Mt.Nanda Devi at dusk from Tali campsite. Nearing Gorson campsite. Rododendrons by the trail
