This is the famous shepherd trail between the lush green Kinnaur Valley and the arid landscape of Spiti. Our trek joins the last villages of both these completely different valleys. It is hard to imagine that such contrasting worlds can exist on either side of a Himalayan pass. The landscape, people, language, cuisine, religion, etc., almost everything undergoes a dramatic shift between the two valleys which would leave anybody astounded. Starting with a heritage Toy train ride to the hill station of Shimla, we then take a road trip along the Sutlej gorges in the Kinnaur area to reach its last village Kafnu. The moderate 5-day trek takes us across the Bhabha Pass into the culturally and geographically distinct moonscape of Spiti. Spiti has a great Buddhist feel with monasteries and fluttering prayer flags compared to the Kinnaur which is mostly dominated by Hindus living in wooden houses clinging to the mountainsides. This trek is also a great way to interact and get an insight into the lives of the Gaddi shepherds who live their lives moving from one grazing ground to other throughout the Himalayan Summers before returning to the plains during the winters.

Show Detailed Itinerary
We take the morning train the Delhi to Kalka and drive to the quaint little town of Narkanda. Overnight Hotel
We make an early start today and start driving to our roadhead - Kafnoo, with the gorges of the Satluj River on our left. The drive will take us to the main town of Wangtoo, where we cross a bridge and drive further to Kafnoo, the last village in the Kinnaur Valley and the start point of our trek. There is a hydro electric dam project nearby. We camp next to a beautiful lake. Lunch enroute. Drive time (282 Kms, 7-8 hrs).Overnight Camp.
We start walking through a dusty track passing the village of Homti on our left. The valley initially becomes narrow before opening up to wide spaces as we reach camp. We start the trek with the Bhaba River on our right. In between we crossover and trek high up through coniferous forests before descending back to the river. We then enter the forest area once again to finally reach the wide meadow at Mulling with the river on our right. We also witness some beautiful waterfalls and melting glaciers on the Bhaba River. Trek time (4 -5 Hrs). Overnight Camp.
Today is a short walk to our next campsite at Kara(3 Hrs). We keep walking through the wide green Valley with the Bhaba River on our right. In between we cross the river and walk on flower carpeted pathways with small boulders scattered around. Then we turn right and walk on a narrow path to reach our next campsite in a beautiful meadow. Great chance to bump into Gaddi shepherds along the way. Trek Time (3-4 hrs). Overnight Camp.
Fustirang is the base of the Bhaba Pass. A short hike from Kara, we walk ahead to the intersection of two valleys and make an almost U-turn into the Bhaba Valley and walk up gradually on a narrow path with the glacial stream on our right to the base of the pass. We start seeing glaciers and ice and snowy peaks as we near the base of the Pass. This is the trail of the Gaddi shepherds and we'll meet quite a few on the way manning huge flocks of sheep and goat. A little above the campsite is a big grazing ground with horses and sheep loitering the countryside. There is a lot of silt in the river and it therefore splits into a lot of smaller channels. We can go around for a short walk above the campsite for exploring and to help in acclimatization. Trek Time (3 hrs). Overnight Camp.
This is the big Day. We walk over boulders, moraine, scree and rough terrain with no proper path to cross the Bhaba Pass (4865m) from the lush green Kinnaur Valley into the Arid, dry Spiti Valley. On a bright and sunny day, this walk is amazing affording excellent views of the mountains in the pin Valley. We are very likely to find a lot of snow and ice at the pass. Sometimes, we may also be accompanied by the shepherds and their big flocks of sheep. After crossing the pass it is a steep descent all the way to Bara Bulder, the camping place for Gaddi shepherds and yak herders. Trek Time (7-8 hrs). Overnight Camp.
Today, we pack and cross the Pin River to reach the roadhead at Mudh Village. We hop into our taxis and bid farewell to our Horsemen and drive to Tabo (2.5 Hrs), which has a 1000 year old monastery and small guesthouses. Time for a hot shower and some Tibetan food. We visit the monastery and the local village. Tabo happens to be the last stretch of the famed Himachal Apple belt which extends From Kinnaur all the way to Spiti. Overnight Hotel.
Today we drive to the capital of Spiti - Kaza, a big town with a beautiful monastery and charming market place. On the way we can visit Dhankar Monastery perched high on a cliff with the Spiti River flowing way below. We visit the the beautiful village of Kibber and also visit the popular Key Monastery in the evening before we head down to Kaza. Overnight Hotel.
We leave early morning from Kaza and drive to Kuzum La, the pass that bifurcates Spiti from Lahaul. We deviate from the main road to Manali and follow the Chandra river upstream towards Chandratal, the spectacular lake with myriad colours and from where you get amazing views of the Chandrabhaga range. Overnight Camp
Driving on bumpy roads to Manali is compensated by amazing views of peaks of the Bara Shigri range. We follow the Chandra river till the base of Rohtang La and then cross the pass to get down to Manali. Overnight at Hotel.

What to expect

A trip graded as a Moderate Trek takes you to high altitude regions - above 3000m / 10,0000ft and will involve considerable altitude gain over the course of the trek. Altitude will have an effect, hence one would need to be careful about acclimatization. Moderate treks will have multiple days which involve considerable amount of ascents and descents  and would require walking for more than 6 hours. There might be a day or two of camping in relatively high altitudes above 4000m / 13,000ft. A typical trek will last around a week to ten days depending on the region and is a good step-up for people who have completed a beginner trek.
