A stunning crossover trek from Suru Valley in Zanskar to the Warwan Valley in Kishtwar region of Jammu and Kashmir, the trek goes over the Bot Kol Pass (4390m) also called Lonvilad galli, a pass formed by the ridge-line which marks the border between the two regions. This classic trek starts in the stunning region of Ladakh, where you'll have time to acclimatize and experience the rich cultural heritage of the region. As you make your way from Leh to Panikhar in the Suru Valley via Kargil, you'll cross many mountain passes and villages along the way. You'll experience the slow yet significant transition of landscape and culture as you travel through this remote and rugged region. You'll have the chance to stop at the interesting monasteries of Lamayuru and Mulbekh and the drive into the Suru Valley is breathtaking, with stunning mountain views, including the famous Nun and Kun peaks. The trek itself takes us across the Great Himalayan range, following one of the few ancient trading routes between Ladakh and Kashmir. You'll journey through glaciers and moraines, surrounded by towering peaks and dramatic valleys. The highlight of the trek is crossing the Bot Kol Pass, a mountain pass at 4,390 meters, which takes you into the stunning Warwan valley. As you descend into the valley, you'll be treated to lush green landscapes and stunning views of the surrounding mountains. This trek is a wild adventure that offers a beautiful contrast between the stark landscapes of Ladakh and the lush green valleys of Kashmir.

Itinerary

Show Detailed Itinerary
The flight takes us over the Greater Himalayas and makes an exciting landing at one of the highest airports in the world. We pick you up from the airport and we drive to Alchi for an hour and a half. We spend the day resting and acclimatising in this special village home to one of the most historic monasteries in the Indus Valley.. Overnight at hotel.
We drive at a leisurely pace down to the Indus valley passing through popular places of interest, through moon like landscape of Lamayuru and an optional stop-over at Mulbekh Gompa which is home to an ancient 30ft rock-carved Buddha which reminds one of the Bamyan Buddhas of Afghanistan. Overnight Hotel in Kargil
We start early in the morning and follow the Suru River till we reach the village of Panikhar, the road-head of our trek. We will be following the Chilong Nala, slowly gaining altitude as we walk upstream. We climb gradually to a meadow on the banks of the wide river basin where we set up camp. Overnight Camp
We trek along the meadows of the Chilong River valley today, crossing multiple streams on the way. The trail leads us to Sumdo (the intersection of two rivers) which we cross and then gradually gain altitude to reach the base of Boktol Pass, located under the shadow of Kalapari Peak. Overnight Camp
It is the longest and toughest day of the trek. The trail ascends sharply through glacial terrain to the top of Boktol/Lonvilad pass where we enjoy incredible views of Kalapari and surrounding peaks. After a quick stop at the pass, we start the long, gruelling descent on the glacier and glacial moraines with loose rocks to reach the snout of the glacier. The conditions of the trail improve as we go along and descend down the picturesque meadows of Kanital. Overnight Camp
Another day walking on vast meadows, this time in the Kanital River valley. As on our way up, we have multiple stream crossings today but they are a lot more gentle. The day's trail is on rolling terrain, with a mix of ascents and descents. We pass a number of Gujjar Huts and shepherd settlements en route to Humpet, where we camp for the night.
We continue our descent down the river valley and the meadows slowly merge with the small birch forests. Further down, we arrive at a junction where there are two trails - one leading to the Amarnath Valley and another into the Warwan Valley. We follow the latter trail which descends down to the grasslands of Sukhnas, also called Sukhnai which is at the intersection of two valleys. Overnight Camp
It is a short but beautiful day today as we pass through numerous villages on either side of Marau/Marwah River till we reach the road here near Basminah village. We say goodbyes to our staff and take a long drive back to Srinagar. Overnight Hotel
Transfer to the Airport and fly back home. Trip ends!

What to expect

A Challenging trek would typically last for about two weeks and will take you to altitudes close to 5000m / 16,500ft. A routine day will have over 6 hours of hiking and will involve a great deal of ascending and descending on sparsely tread trails. The terrain will be varied on these treks and you can expect walking on moraines / boulder fields and cross small glaciers. Acclimatisation is a concern, the itineraries are carefully planned  and allow everyone to acclimatise to the increasing altitude. Exposure to cold temperatures is quite high on these treks, all participants are expected to have good quality equipment & clothing to enjoy these treks. A mix of wilderness, altitude, terrain and duration makes these treks challenging. The trek is Suited for people with high fitness levels looking for a challenge and capable of enduring two weeks in the outdoors. While the Bot Kol Pass is of relatively lower altitude, walking on glaciers on both sides of the pass and a long cross-over day makes it a challenging trek.
